Florida Cosmetology License Lookup

Records for a cosmetology license are held by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and its own portal is the place to check one. Before searching, it is worth knowing that a Florida salon is already required to show you two documents on the wall, and every practitioner to display their credential at their own station.

What the salon must already be showing you

A licensed salon has display obligations of its own, and they answer part of this question before any search does.

Two documents, “in a conspicuous place which is clearly visible to the general public upon entering the salon”: the current salon license, and a legible copy of the most recent inspection sheet. Separately, the salon must ensure every individual practising displays “at the individual’s work station their current license or registration” (Rule 61G5-20.004).

The inspection sheet is the one most people do not know to look for.

Where the record lives

The Department maintains the license records. This site does not host a copy, does not mirror one, and cannot look anything up — a second-hand copy of a license record is exactly the kind of thing that goes stale without anyone noticing.

Two things a lookup will not tell you

Whether the work needs a license at all. Braiding, wrapping, nail polish and makeup application are exempt by statute, so finding no record may simply mean none is required. See work that needs no license.

Which credential covers which service. A registration and a license are different things in this chapter, and the scope differences are real.
